Microsoft implemented significant changes to its licensing policies in 2022. These changes, known as the New Commerce Experience (NCE), affect all license renewals and promise a more streamlined and contemporary approach to licensing. In this blog, we will guide you through the key aspects of this transformation and developments in 2024.
What is the Microsoft New Commerce Experience (NCE)?
The New Commerce Experience is Microsoft's new licensing approach introduced in 2022. This change aims to improve and adapt the license renewal process to the rapidly evolving needs of organizations worldwide.

Expansion into the public sector
Microsoft has confirmed that the New Commerce Experience will also be made available to the public sector, including academic institutions, government agencies, and non-profit organizations. This change will take effect on January 1, 2024.
Migration of old subscriptions
For those currently using older public sector subscriptions, automatic migration to NCE begins on July 1, 2024. Microsoft guarantees a smooth transition, maintaining the same billing plan and number of seats as on the legacy platform.
For old commercial legacy subscriptions, migration will begin on January 1, 2024, and will be carried out on the contract renewal date.
After the migration, there is a seven-day period during which changes can be made or the subscription can be canceled if necessary. By default, after migration, a contract has a duration of one year with automatic renewal.
Impact of discount campaigns
Also important is the change in discount campaigns. Some discounts from the legacy platform will disappear or be replaced by other promotions within the scope of NCE.
Price increase and US Dollar price list
In addition, there is the already announced price increase from Microsoft, linked to the global US Dollar price list. For more details on this price increase and the potential impact on your licenses, please visit scapta.com.
In summary, the Microsoft New Commerce Experience offers a new and modern approach to licensing, tailored to the needs of today and tomorrow. It is essential for organizations to be aware of these changes and take timely action to ensure a seamless transition.
